I decided to put together a couch #flatlay of #bookrecommendations from #RandomHouse and friends. These are all four to five stars (maybe closer to five) books!

If I am forced to pick some favorites, I would say THE MARGOT AFFAIR, VELVET WAS THE NIGHT, and THE LIFE OF THE MIND. But honestly, HAIL MARY is easily five stars and BUILD YOUR HOUSE AROUND MY BODY is incredible. Also, if you love cozy mysteries, you’ll love this highly gift-able book, YOUR GUIDE TO NOT GETTING MURDERED IN A QUAINT ENGLISH VILLAGE.

THE LAST HOUSE ON NEEDLESS STREET by @catward66 is an intricate, beautifully written masterpiece of a horror novel. It’s definitely one of my top books of the year. Unfortunately, I can’t exactly tell you why I loved it so much because it would give away too many spoilers. My advice: go into this one with as little knowledge as possible. But here are my two cents.

We follow multiple perspectives between Ted, his daughter Lauren, his cat Olivia, and his neighbor Dee. Ted, Lauren, and Olivia reside in a ramshackle house on Needless Street. Dee, whose sister Lulu went missing over a decade ago, is desperately trying to prove who kidnapped her.

The story starts off in an intentionally slow, ambiguous way as Ward jumps in without much explanation. Now, this is the genius of Ward because she gives you each piece of the puzzle, chapter by chapter, until you finally understand the big picture. The character development is superb and the story itself, including the ending, are skillfully executed. And yes, I’m just going to say it, the cat is my favorite narrator. One more thing: make sure you read the Afterward when you finish, but not before, as it gives the whole thing away.

THE LAST HOUSE ON NEEDLESS STREET will have you thinking about it long after you finish. Catriona Ward handled this story with great care and precision. All the stars for this one.

Happy Sunday, all. I’ve been MIA, well know the drill, migraine migraine migraine. Luckily, today I felt better. Food tastes better, colors are brighter, birds are singing.

Hopefully, the migraine thing will get better. I got my headache shots on Friday and I’m waiting for my insurance to approve the new medication *commence eye roll*. Here’s the thing…I loathe talking about my problems. It’s my least favorite pastime. I am not comfortable being the center of attention and I am a private person when it comes to things like this. But after 4 years of being in the #Bookstagram community, which I love, I feel it’s necessary to explain why I might be missing in action. I am not here as a chore - I actually enjoy doing this, but sometimes my head won’t let me concentrate. While I can read, chatting on social media is the first to go. I never want any of you to think you’re not important. And I hope you’ll hang around until I work through this. I promise, I’m never far away 💋

Enough with that, how are YOU doing? I’d love to know a positive thing about your weekend! I just started HORSEMAN by Christina Henry. And the best part is I’m buddy reading it with my friend Chandra (@wherethereadergrows) 💋

SUMMER SONS by @leemandelo is a fresh take on Southern gothic suspense that mixes an ample amount of genres, including supernatural horror, fantasy, coming of age, mystery, all combined with a few action-packed scenes. It’s a story of ghosts, grief, and friendship, and I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Andrew and Eddie had a bond greater than if they were brothers. Eddie went off to graduate school in Nashville, and Andrew wasn’t far behind. But when Eddie was found dead, an apparent suicide, Andrew is devastated. He just doesn’t believe his best friend would kill himself. Even more curious, Eddie left Andrew everything in his wake. He inherits his house, money, friends, the mystery of his death, and a few hauntings.

SUMMER SONS has queer characters, drugs, fast cars, plenty of suspicion, secrets, and even possession. The pacing slows down a bit in the middle and may feel overly detailed, but that didn’t slow me down one bit. The heart of the story is about facing past trauma and dealing with intense loss. Andrew is not only haunted by Eddie’s death, he is haunted by his life. I highly recommend you add this one to your fall reading list.
