Review: THE WORD IS MURDER by Anthony Horowitz

Thank you so very much to Harper Books for my free copy – all opinions are my own.

Description:

One bright spring morning in London, Diana Cowper – the wealthy mother of a famous actor – enters a funeral parlor. She is there to plan her own service. Six hours later she is found dead, strangled with a curtain cord in her own home. Enter disgraced police detective Daniel Hawthorne, a brilliant, eccentric investigator who’s as quick with an insult as he is to crack a case. Hawthorne needs a ghost writer to document his life; a Watson to his Holmes. He chooses Anthony Horowitz. Drawn in against his will, Horowitz soon finds himself a the center of a story he cannot control. Hawthorne is brusque, temperamental and annoying but even so his latest case with its many twists and turns proves irresistible. The writer and the detective form an unusual partnership. At the same time, it soon becomes clear that Hawthorne is hiding some dark secrets of his own.

My Review:

I am ashamed to say that I have not read MAGPIE MURDERS yet, especially now that I know Horowitz is a genius writer! Seriously, this book is knock your socks off, blow your hair back, brilliant!

Daniel Hawthorne, an eccentric and brilliant ex-detective, gets called in to investigate a case: a woman gets strangled six hours after planning her own funeral. Did she plan her own death too? Hawthorne teams up with a ghostwriter because he wants to document the case for a book. The writer you ask? Yep, Anthony Horowitz himself. The two are reminiscent of Watson and Holmes as they are shrewd, litigious, and witty. This is a good old fashioned mystery, but it’s an ingenious one.

I had the most fun reading this book. As a kid, I was obsessed with the game and the movie Clue – OBSESSED! And this book is like stepping right into that game. The characters are masterfully written and highly entertaining. But the star of the show is the cleverly crafted mystery. I loved working along side this dynamic duo looking at clues and trying to predict what would happen next. THE WORD IS MURDER is inventive, unique, and twisty with the most perfect ending. I devoured it! Bravo Mr. Horowitz!

My rating is 5 out of 5 stars!
