Caitlin Hendrix is a rookie FBI agent that is now a profiler for the Behavioral Science Unit. She is in a small town in Texas, far away from the familiarity of her home in San Franciso and her boyfriend, Sean. She is called to investigate a case involving murdered women wearing white nightgowns, posed in such a way that mimics the act of suicide. Caitlin has good instincts and follows a hunch that leads her to the prime suspect. She takes desperate acts to get into the killer’s mind in order to find a way to bring him to justice. Is she able to put her past behind her in order to catch the killer?
“Her pulse pounded in her forehead. ‘And I’d slip under the surface of a warm bath. Into floating darkness. It would be like…’ Her voice grew soft. ‘Like falling through a field of stars, into the black nowhere.”
OH MY GAWD this book is SO good! Meg Gardiner really knows how to write a serial killer thriller. And dare I say police procedural? I hesitate to use that description because it sounds so ordinary when there is nothing ordinary about Gardiner’s writing. I feel like I’m in the place while it’s happening, feeling what Caitlin feels, and I personally know all of her colleagues. The descriptions are vivid and intense and the character development is top notch. Caitlin’s character is professional, but not boring, and very relatable. The dialog of the antagonist has a creepy factor that’s through the roof. I absolutely love getting the bone chilling perspective of the psychopath. It’s a voice in your head that will cause nightmares! Several years back I listened to the last interview Ted Bundy recorded and it all came back to me when I read this book. INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE is the second book in the UNSUB series and highly recommend both. I could not be more impressed with this series—it’s insanely good!!
I rate this book 5 / 5 stars!
