ā€œBetter to be a fool than an angel.ā€

I really enjoyed this book! As soon as I read the gruesome opening, I was hooked. It was very different than what I expected but not in a bad way. I honestly canā€™t believe this a debut novel as it is so expertly written.

THE CHALK MAN is about five best friends, Eddie, Metal Mickey, Hoppo, Nicky, and Fat Gav. They were inseparable and even though Nicky is a girl, she most definitely could keep up with the boys. I loved the 1980ā€™s vibeā€”it reminded me a little of Stand by Me. One day a strange ā€œchalk manā€ leads them to a dismembered body in the woods and changes everything. Now all grown up, Eddie, a teacher, lives in his childhood home with a lodger named Chloe. He canā€™t settle down or move on from that summer thirty years ago.

This is a psychological thriller that reads a little slow, but with a lot of great twists. The novel alternates between 1986 and 2016 and is written from Eddieā€™s point of view. The big standout for me is that the story has such a unique plotā€”I havenā€™t read too many books like this. It was creepy, chilling, and fun all at the same time. I thought it was a brilliant story with a fantastic ending I did not see coming! Highly, highly recommended!

I rate this book 4 / 5 stars!
