Review: BONE MUSIC by Christopher Rice

I’m so thankful to Little Bird Publicity, Thomas & Mercer, and Amazon Publishing for providing my free copy – all opinions are my own.

Book Description:

There’s more than one way to stoke the flames of revenge…

Charlotte Rowe spent the first seven years of her life in the hands of the only parents she knew—a pair of serial killers who murdered her mother and tried to shape Charlotte in their own twisted image. If only the nightmare had ended when she was rescued. Instead, her real father exploited her tabloid-ready story for fame and profit—until Charlotte finally broke free from her ghoulish past and fled. Just when she thinks she has buried her personal hell forever, Charlotte is swept into a frightening new ordeal. Secretly dosed with an experimental drug, she’s endowed with a shocking new power—but pursued by a treacherous corporation desperate to control her.

Except from now on, if anybody is going to control Charlotte, it’s going to be Charlotte herself. She’s determined to use the extraordinary ability she now possesses to fight the kind of evil that shattered her life—by drawing a serial killer out from the shadows to face the righteous fury of a victim turned avenger.

“All she feels is the bone music and the sense that she has become not darkness but a great fire, bringing a sudden, blazing end to it.”

My Review:

This book literally grabbed my attention from the very first sentence and just kept hold of me the entire time I was reading it! It’s one outstanding thriller and Rice is one hell of a writer!

Daniel and Abigail Banning are a husband and wife team of serial killers. They take it upon themselves to abduct and raise a child named Trina, and they spare her no detail of their daily practices. The Bannings are finally arrested and Trina is placed back with her biological family. Flash forward and Trina is twenty six years old and has changed her name to Charlotte Rowe. She’s living on her own and seeing a psychiatrist who is treating her for anxiety. Not only does she have a troubled past, she has a demented stalker too. Charlotte can’t sleep so her psychiatrist gives her a mysterious pill that changes everything.

Like every great thriller, the short chapters keep the pace moving perfectly and the writing seams effortless! The plot is complex with a perfect blend of thriller, suspense, and science fiction. Rice does a stellar job writing Charlotte’s character! Although there are some alternative perspectives (which I love), it’s primarily Charlotte’s we see. I love that she’s strong, smart, self-reliant, and has just the right amount of sass. Being that she was raised by two psychopaths, her constant battle with good and evil is interesting and adds an element of psychology that I really enjoy.

This is not a short book but it turned out to be an easy, quick read. I am already obsessed with The Burning Girl series and cannot wait for the next installment! I was not expecting to love this book as much as I do!! It’s truly a brilliant, fun story!

My rating is 5 / 5 stars!
